AEFM’s current project with the Eritrean National Diabetic Association (ENDA)

AEFM’s current project enhancement involvement is with the Eritrean National Diabetic Association (ENDA). ENDA was started in 1998 and has currently over 100,000 members. While the Government provides free medical services to people with diabetics, the role of the Association is to increase awareness of the disease and promote healthy life style as it relates to,

  • Improving blood-sugar management
  • Lowering high blood pressure
  • Improving breathing and sleeping patterns
  • Reducing risk of heart disease
  • Reducing risk of cancers

So far, AEFM has provided the Association with digital camera, laptop computer, desktop computer, and laser printer.

AEFM has also offered to the Asmara's Orotta Medical School of the Ministry of Health to sponsor medical students up to US$3,000 to conduct diabetic-related research and is waiting a response from the school.
Dr. Berhane Seyoum who is a member of AEFM’s Board of Directors represents AEFM as it collaborates with ENDA. He is also a member of the Executive Board of ENDA and its Representative for Eritrea in International Diabetes related meetings. Thus, he represented Eritrea in December 2011 in Dubai during the Diabetes World Congress and will represent ENDA at the American Diabetes Association meeting which is going to be held in June 2012 in Philadelphia. Finally, Dr. Berhane volunteers paying ENDA’s yearly membership dues for the International Diabetes Federation.
